Choose a Dumpster Size for a Kingsport Project
Volume tells only half the story. Material weight and driveway access decide the rest.
Use the measurements as planning estimates, then confirm the actual container and truck assigned to the quote. Container dimensions and door styles vary by fleet.

Four footprints. One material-first decision.
The taller silhouette means more volume, not unlimited weight. Confirm dimensions and allowances for the actual container quoted.
| Size | Approximate footprint | Volume comparison | Typical discussion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 12 ft × 8 ft | about 3 pickup truck loads | Compact footprint for focused projects and dense material. |
| 15 yard | 16 ft × 8 ft | about 4–5 pickup truck loads | A useful middle size for cleanouts that outgrow a pickup. |
| 20 yard | 22 ft × 8 ft | about 6–7 pickup truck loads | The standard residential roll-off for roofs and larger cleanouts. |
| 30 yard | 22 ft × 8 ft | about 9–10 pickup truck loads | High-volume capacity for bulky material and multi-stage projects. |
Measure the delivery path, not just the parking spot
A tape measure can prove that the box fits while missing the reason a truck cannot set it. Delivery needs room to approach, raise the bed, roll the container into place, and leave without striking a structure, wire, limb, vehicle, or soft shoulder.
Photographs from the street toward the placement area are useful when the drive is steep, curved, narrow, gated, gravel, or close to overhead utilities.
Match weight to the box
Heavy material reaches a transport limit before it reaches the top rail. Concrete, soil, block, brick, plaster, tile, and shingles need a material-specific loading plan. Never assume the full cubic capacity is available for dense debris.
Bulky material has the opposite problem. Furniture, cabinets, branches, and framing waste can consume volume while leaving unused weight allowance. Break items down when it is safe to do so.
10 Yard Dumpster
Think one bathroom, a small flooring tear-out, a shed cleanout, or a carefully limited load of concrete or soil. It is not a miniature 20 yard container. Its advantage is that it keeps a dense load from becoming too heavy to transport safely.
15 Yard Dumpster
A 15 yard works best when the debris is mixed but the project has a defined boundary. A garage full of boxes and furniture, carpet from several rooms, or lumber from a modest deck can fit without paying for the footprint of a 30 yard.
20 Yard Dumpster
Roofing is the project most often associated with this size, but shingle weight can become the limiting factor. Square count, number of layers, and roofing material matter more than the visual volume of the pile.
30 Yard Dumpster
This size makes sense when the debris is large but not exceptionally dense. Furniture, framing, siding, cabinets, packaging, and mixed construction material use volume. Concrete, soil, and masonry do not belong in a full 30 yard load.
When to move up one size
Move up when the debris estimate is uncertain, the material is bulky, or a second delivery would interrupt labor. Do not move up automatically for dense debris. For heavy loads, the safe answer may be a smaller box or a restricted fill line.
Frequently asked questions
Are dumpster dimensions exact?
No. The measurements on this site are planning estimates. Confirm the dimensions, door configuration, and truck clearance for the container actually quoted.
Can I fill every size to the top?
Only when the material and weight allow it, and nothing may extend above the top rail. Dense materials often require a much lower fill level.
Is a larger dumpster always a better value?
No. Larger is useful for bulky debris, but it can be the wrong and unsafe choice for concrete, dirt, masonry, and other dense loads.
Which size is easiest to place?
The 10 yard has the shortest footprint, but the delivery truck still needs a suitable approach. Surface, slope, turns, and overhead clearance matter for every size.
